President’s Message - continued

 the 2001/2002 cycle; CCS/CCS-P non-member certification fees will increase from $40/year to $55/year in 2001.

 2)  A make-over of the Bylaws.  Proposed changes in Bylaws come under four subject headings: Changes relating to CSA’s; Changes relating to the HOD; Changes relating to the Nominating Committee and elections; and other proposed changes.   Anita Sommerfeld, RHIA, 2nd year Director has a full plate this year as our representative to the HOD.  Good luck Anita, I know you will do an excellent job.  Please contact Anita if you have a message for her at sommer@acsalaska.net.

  Our first teleconference Board meeting took place September 5th.  We had a very aggressive agenda.  Everyone except Cindy, who was in Africa (or as I can now say, out of Africa) was in attendance.   I shared one of several goals for this year; developing alliances with other organizations in Alaska.  As long as alliances do not entail contractual or monetary commitment, the Board is in full agreement.  Our past leadership had the wisdom and the vision to include alliances in the strategic plan. A key process for growth is to focus on alliance building. Those elements so well stated are to practice leadership, and promote and support education and professional development.

President’s Goal:

“developing alliances with other organizations in Alaska.”

The goals of alliance building would be:

a) increasing awareness and under-standing of our professional interests and expertise with other health associations;

b) developing strong and effective relationships with other associa-tions in or associated with the health care field and

c) work with alliances to influence health care policies and pro-cedures for improving health care delivery and health information in Alaska.

 With Board approval, I have already developed an alliance with PRO-WEST.  PRO-WEST will underwrite the administrative and financial obligations for outreach by co-chairing the Coding Round Table Coordinator (RTC) role with them.  Sherry (Higgenbotham) Rains from ANMC will represent PRO-WEST as co-chair.  Sherry needs to obtain her AHIMA membership and to apply for membership in AKHIMA to fulfill the role of co-chair.  There is a article elsewhere in this issue asking for member interest to apply for the role of RTC.  Linda Rescoe of Fairbanks, faithfully fulfilled the role of RTC for many years.  Thank you Linda, your efforts on behalf of AKHIMA are very much appreciated.

 Some bits and pieces.

w  This year Alaska has 92 members signed up with the national association!

w  Our web site is being maintained by Jodi Reed, who has an article  elsewhere in this publication.  She welcomes your comments and ideas.  What do you want to see on the web site?  Please contact Jodi at jodi@pobox.alaska.net and let her know. You might also consider volunteering to assist Jodi with her web mastering.

w I need to tell you that Kathryn Chenery, Past President, has left Alaska and returned home to Virginia.  We are thankful for her willingness to mentor and are indebted to her for her many acts of volunteering on behalf of the Association.

w The blessing coming out of Kathryn’s move is that Marianne Dailey has been appointed by the Board to fulfill the role of 3rd year Director and Past President.  Please take the time to thank Marianne for her dedication to AKHIMA..
